Weather in Lake Tahoe
Those who truly love the Lake Tahoe area will tell you that the weather is ideal any time of the year. Snow bunnies, of course, enjoy the abundant white stuff and those who call it home in the summer appreciate the lack of humidity and the moderate temperatures. Needless to say, it all depends on your outlook.
Nonetheless, the weather in Lake Tahoe could actually be classified as quite moderate. Sunshine is clearly visible about 270-300 days each year and the temperatures are not as extreme as one might surmise that they would be. The precipitation is manageable as well. In fact, the area enjoys a lot less snow and rain than the western “windward” side of the Sierra Mountain range.
The average elevation in the Lake Tahoe region is 6,000 feet so winter storms certainly aren’t unusual and are expected by those who live in or visit the area during the winter months. That’s what makes the area so popular with skiing enthusiasts! At lake level, the average annual snowfall is over 18 feet or some 215 inches per year. At the alpine skiing elevations, the snowfall can amount to as high as 300-500 inches annually, a real draw for those who love winter sports. January is the coldest month of the year, with average highs of about 40 degrees and average lows at 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spring storms, which can occur in April, can dump an additional few feet of snow on the region, but temperatures warm up more quickly at this time of year and the snow melts at a faster pace. Nights, however, remain quite cold through the spring so it’s always necessary to bring a variety of clothes when visiting during that time of year. Average temperatures in April are 51 degrees for the high and about 27 for the low. The warm up is more noticeable when May roles around.
Summers in the Lake Tahoe region are simply splendid but may be too cool for those who like subtropical and other toasty climates. August tends to be the warmest month of the year. Average temperatures during that month range from lows of about 40 to highs of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation is quite low from June through September, with average rainfall during those months measuring only about one to two inches. Precipitation picks up significantly in November.
The fall weather can be equally as pleasant as the spring time and these two shoulder seasons are a good time to visit and avoid the crowds of mid-winter and mid-summer. Temperatures in September average around 70 degrees and are about 10 degrees cooler in October, still quite pleasant and totally devoid of humidity, for the most part.
